Happy Birthday to my Friend

Posted in Food, General at 8:42 pm by ryushin

Went out for a gathering with jc clique to sort of celebrate jh’s birthday. We decided upon Le Le Pot, which is situated somewhere in Tiong Bahru. Well, it is located at one small street and somewhat hidden from view of the major roads, so I guess it wasn’t very well known too. In fact, there isn’t much web presence either. Anyway, it was opened by this Chinese celebrity who used to appear in my local tv dramas, but I cannot recall his name. He seems rather friendly and even come out to serve customers a couple of times (but he has this erm, how should I put it, lack of expression).

Ok so we have this steamboat buffet in the small shopspace, which eventually felt relatively hot due to the many many many steamboats snuffing out the aircon, but it was still better than most of those you find in Bugis anyday, those are REALLY HOT. With 5 persons, we could only get 2 soup bases, so eventually it was tom yum and herbal chicken. Another thing is you order the food ala carte style and they will bring it to your seats, so no need to keep elbowing your way to the food trays and compete for the stuffs you want. I thought that was a great feature that most steamboats outlets lack.

To comment on the food, the variety is ok for the size of the shop. Very reasonable range of food within each category. And I might also add that they do have a small selection of fried food and prepared dishes that you do not need to cook. It received bonus points from me because these felt non-oily at all! And they taste reasonably good. You know, have been to many many buffet style places and they like to try many many ways to make customers eat less with varied ingenious methods such as having very oily food etc. But over here even the servers ask us to eat more! I think I should also commend on the attentiveness and friendliness of the staff. I’m sure the layout also made it very easy to notice and look out for your customers.

1 more thing about the food. Be on your toes when getting the mussels clams blah blah. Not sure if they had been cleaned properly. Thankfully we only got those on the 3rd round of our orders. Coz after that we ate SAND. Now thats a turn-off. And it also made our appetite goes down I suppose, as nobody seemed to want to eat soon (and also the range of food, coz we more or less ate most/all of the things we wanted to). Oh it came with 1 desert each too, which was some much needed ice. We didn’t order drinks though some of them went next door for a slurpee when we are done. Overall, I still think its one of the best steamboats I have had at this kind of price range. Great, recommended to try.

Well I got this because I saw its supremely high rating. But when I started, I was like hur? 1 ep… 2 eps… and blah (22 eps in total) It was somewhat awfully slow moving. I wondered what was wrong. But thankfully, it was just momentarily. Before long, things swung into motion and I was captivated. The plot is EPIC. Well at least I like this kind of shows (just wonder why my local tv station cannot produce anything like this :D )

So in a nutshell, as the title suggests, this is about some covert plans against the other person. Care for a little dance with your enemy? Smile together, joke together, drink together, embrace each other, work with each other, give your all for each other. Deep down inside, a hidden battle is being fought. Is what you see on the surface reality? Who will turn around and stab you in the back? Complex intricate relations tie the characters together, in a race against time to achieve their objectives. Just observe the extent of deceit and subterfuge one can go through for a greater cause, to manipulate, to exploit. Heavy sacrifices were made, reputations lost, feelings suppressed, lives taken. Winner takes all? You will see…

Red Eye

Watched another old movie. A bit of a suspense thriller this time. To be honest, it is pretty average, but well worth your time if you are into this genre.

Basically, it is about an assassination attempt of a (I think) politician whose family is going to lodge in a hotel, where the protagonist is a staff. This staff, a lady, is going on a hellavu adventure on a flight. The standout point here is that there is no blatant hijacking of the plane, but rather a relatively helpless lady is being dominated by a scheming guy who has her dad’s life in his hands.

Perhaps you might want to see how she managed to salvage the lives of everyone from the hotel, to the plane, and her dad and herself. But otherwise there isn’t any exceptional themes to be found in the movie, so just treat it like yet another time entertainer.

The Horsemen

2009 movie. Limited release. Rated R for grisly and disturbing content, some sexual images and language.

This is definitely not a show for the faint hearted. It is not what I would call scary, but its the deep psycho effect. Detective Aidan Breslin is dragged into a series of perverse twisted deaths, which soon is revealed to revolve around the prophetic initiation of hell on earth by the 4 Horsemen of Apocalypse.

(Note that there are quite a number of different versions of the persona of the 4 horsemen, and I’m not sure which ones the show exactly used, coz there seems to be some conflicts with the color themes and the names of the horsemen)

Plot wise, some of the early parts is more or less story building, and quite fine and dandy. But it became more predictable towards the end. (Especially the last horseman is quite easy to figure out, jize…) Central to the theme is something simple. It sends a brutally honest and heartchilling message across. All parents should not leave your kids alone in their fucked up world until it is too late.  I would actually suggest people to watch it (if you feel you are ready) in anticipation of parenthood, or if you are already a parent.
